Michigan’s unemployment is 7% higher than the previous year in June (’08). That brings Michigan’s total unemployment rate to 15.2%. Michigan has had the highest unemployment rates in the nation.

Officials blame a large drop in manufacturing jobs including the auto industries jobs. Critics are calling on officials to improve unemployment insurance for Michigan’s ailing economy.

Unemployment only counts as those who are actively seeking employment, that being said, the under-employed and those who stop looking for work would raise the “jobless rate” from 17.4% to about 22.5%.
